Family Medicine

Travis Layne, M.D.

Having grown up in Essex County, I know firsthand how amazing of an institution Mountainside is. As a medical student, I was afforded the opportunity to do an Internship with the Family Medicine Residency program. Within the first hour, what became evident to me was the culture. People happily greeted and talked to one another with respect and learning, as well as communication were highly encouraged. Residents and staff were visibly happy -it genuinely reminded me of a family.

The HackensackUMC Mountainside Family Medicine Residency Program stood out to me for its commitment to supportive mentorship, collaborative learning, and diverse patient experiences.

Envisioning a future as a family medicine physician, I sought out to choose the program that would best prepare me for taking care of any patient who walks through my door. Interviewing with Hackensack Mountainside, I not only witnessed the strong culture of academic excellence and community involvement, but also the sense of camaraderie and support between the attending physicians, residents, and staff. When I matched to Hackensack Mountainside, I was thrilled to learn that I would be able to complete my training at a great program close to home.

Philip Moodey, M.D.

One of the first things that drew me to the Mountainside Family Medicine program was the diversity of education the residents received. I loved that the program placed emphasis on residents being educated in the clinic, the hospital, the emergency room, nursing homes, the delivery room, the OR, inpatient floors, and much more. After meeting everyone at the program, I feel confident that I will develop the skills to have a positive impact as a Family Medicine physician, and that I would be supported by both the faculty and my co-residents.

Matthew Guariglia, D.O.

I selected HackensackUMC Mountainside because North Jersey is my home and Family Medicine is my passion. I wanted my residency training to be done at a community hospital that has deep roots in North Jersey while having the support of a large health network such as Hackensack. What stood out to me the most was how friendly and approachable everyone was from the attendings to the residents. I feel reassured that I will be trained to become a confident, knowledgeable, and compassionate physician who will continue to serve the healthcare needs of North Jersey residents for years to come.
