Inpatient Wards/Floors
Wards/Floors
Internal Medicine Wards rotation is structured around three floor teams (A, B, and C). Each team is composed of one PGY1 intern and one supervising senior resident, together managing a maximum of 14 patients per team. Interns are responsible for up to 10 patients, with the senior resident overseeing the team's care and directly managing any additional patients. This rotation emphasizes ownership of patient care, collaboration within a small team structure, and direct supervision and teaching from senior residents and attending physicians. Floor teams cover from 7am – 4pm with each team alternating long call days (from 4pm-7pm) whereupon they sign out to the night team. A typical floor schedule is:

Nightfloat
Night float rotation consists of one PGY1 and one senior resident who provide cross-coverage for all Med-Surg and step-down patients on Teams A, B, and C. Overnight responsibilities include addressing acute patient issues, responding to rapid responses and codes, and admitting an average of 2–5 new patients per night. Night float residents are in-house from 19:00 to 07:00, ensuring safe and continuous patient care while facilitating smooth handoffs to the day teams each morning.
Resident Admitting Officer
Seniors (PGY2 and PGY3) are assigned one to two blocks where they serve as RAO, the major gatekeeper to the teaching service of the department of Medicine. All admissions coming to the teaching service are presented to the RAO, who performs a quick review and triage of the patient and assigns the patient to the appropriate team. In addition, the RAO responds to rapids, codes and provides consultation services to other departments in the hospital.
Swing Shift Resident
Seniors (PGY2 and PGY3) are also assigned one to two blocks where they cover a 'swing.' Between 11:30 AM – 7 PM, they in conjunction with the on-call physician for the ER that day, admit up to 10 private patients to the teaching service.
