Subspecialty Faculty Coordinators

Cardiovascular Diseases

Kenneth Bannerman, M.D., FACC

  • MD: New York Medical College Alpha Omega Alpha
  • Residency: Metropolitan Hospital, New York
  • Fellowship: Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, New York

"As an intern I quickly realized that the art of medicine is passed from generation to generation not only by studying textbooks and journal articles, but also from teacher to student, resident to intern, attending to resident. From reading, we acquire knowledge. From teachers, we learn wisdom - how to apply knowledge in an effective way. I chose to join the medical staff of HUMC Mountainside because of its excellent Cardiology department and its excellent residency teaching program. I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the educational process including preceptorships, cardiology rounding with the residents, lecturing and taking the residents on hikes. I consider it a privilege to be part of this teaching program."

"Nothing is more rewarding than passing on knowledge and wisdom to a new generation of physicians. I was an Emergency Medicine residency director for 10 years and I am overjoyed every time I see one of my past residents and hear of their success stories! Working with the residents at MSH infuses me with energy and challenges me to stay on the cutting edge of medicine."

Gastroenterology

  • Residency: Trinitas Regional Medical Center
  • Geriatrics Fellowship: University of Pennsylvania Hospital
  • GI Fellowship: St. Joseph's University Medical Center, NY Medical College
  • Advanced GI Fellowship: MedStar Georgetown University Hospital

"I have always been interested in guiding and teaching the internal medicine residents. The internal medicine program is very strong and we have excellent residents joining our program on a competitive matching system. Once they come into the hospital, the residents provide excellent care under the guidance of core academic teachers and active medical staff. The Gastroenterology Division is an active core member of the hospital with 12 fulltime gastroenterologists who provide excellent care to the local community. The residents, taught and mentored by the GI faculty, actively participate in research on complex cases and participate in GI procedures. This year alone, we had five poster presentations accepted at the American College of Gastroenterology!"

Medical Oncology

John Conti, M.D., FACP

  • MD: UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, Alpha Omega Alpha
  • Residency: University Hospital, Newark, New Jersey
  • Fellowship: Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York
  • Faculty Appointment: Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School

"I am very proud to have worked with the Mountainside Medical Center house staff for almost twenty years along with being the division chief of oncology for the last eight years. During that time, I have been very impressed with the enthusiasm and excitement that the residents and interns demonstrate regarding patients with cancer and during the oncology lecture series. I appreciate that many house staff choose to augment their cancer medicine learning by doing outpatient rotations with our group and often many of these residents subsequently present prize winning case presentations and original research at the New Jersey Oncology Society meetings. As our population continues to age, cancer will increase even further in incidence and oncology knowledge for internal medicine physicians will become even more crucial. I hope to continue as your oncology division chief for many years to come, so that I may continue to help our future practicing physicians gain proficiency in the field of oncology."

Alvin Bell, M.D.

  • MD: Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Residency: Harlem Hospital Center, New York
  • Fellowship: Harlem Hospital Center, New York

"I enjoy teaching. I always look for the opportunity to teach evidence-based medicine to the house staff and other members of the HUMC Mountainside clinical community. Evidence based training is crucial to the future of these young physicians. It is also important that the house staff understand the social and financial impact that chronic diseases and hospitalizations have on patients and their families."

Neurology

David Blady, M.D.

  • MD: SUNY Downstate, Brooklyn, New York

"I have been teaching residents for more than 25 years. I thoroughly enjoy participating in the intellectual growth of trainees as they evolve from internship through residency into practice. HUMC Mountainside offers a challenging environment where residents are exposed to a wide variety of neurological conditions to prepare them for the realities of their future practices."

Dr. Hetal Patel

  • MD: St. George’s University
  • Residency: Saint Barnabas Hospital
  • Fellowship: Medical College of Georgia

"I have enjoyed teaching others since I was a resident. Helping someone understand a disease process or treatment regimen is a very satisfying and rewarding feeling. There is an art to medicine that you cannot learn in textbooks, it is something that you learn through experience and great mentors. I look forward to passing on this knowledge to the next generation of physicians. I am very excited and honored to be a part of the teaching Faculty of Mountainside Medical Center."

Rheumatology

Dr. Randolph Sanchez

  • Medical School: Ibero-American University, Dominican Republic

"Rheumatology is an aspect of medicine that has entered its Renaissance. The core principles and diseases of Rheumatology are becoming ever more present in Internal Medicine and multiple subspecialties. As such, the modern physician should be exposed to this knowledge throughout their formation. I am honored to be that guide to the future physicians of our community."
